Metal Gear
continues on with some surprising departures from the previous titles. Gone are
the fantasy settings of high-tech neo-futuristic compounds seen so heavily in
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater sees the series taking a drastic about-face in order to
"return to origin" and the root of the series, which is anchored in the spy-heavy Cold War era of
the 1960's. The game promises to be more difficult than the past titles with its in-depth
gameplay and fragile survival system and relies more heavily on stealth and guerilla tactics
than ever before. In an unexpected departure from the last game, series creator Hideo Kojima
seems to have struck upon a whole new source of inspiration. Despite his flagging interest
in continuing the series following the tiresome ordeal completing Sons of Liberty, Kojima-san
seems to have revitalized the very espionage genre that he birthed - one which seemed to
almost slip from his grasp due to the troubled storytelling aspects that plagued Metal Gear Solid 2.
